Why Student-Led Peer Mediation?
Student-Led Peer Mediation (SLPM) is a process where trained students act as neutral mediators. Students in conflict work with a trained student mediator to uncover the root causes of their disputes and together decide on fair ways of resolving conflict.
SLPM in schools offers the innovative opportunity to establish and improve healthy communication between families and schools. It's confidential, creating an environment of open and peaceful communication that allows for students and their surrounding community to excel.
The SLPM program is designed to be easily picked up by schools and scaled to meet the needs of the students, ranging from voluntary, extracurricular mediations to integrating mediation into the school's disciplinary process. CRCSTL provides the training and technical assistance necessary for schools to fully implement the program using existing resources and offers ongoing support as needed.
Training peer mediators to serve in their respective schools will keep student issues at a student level and prioritize restorative justice over punishment.
Student Led Peer Mediation Guide
In summer 2021, CRCSTL, in partnership with the St. Louis Area Violence Prevention Committee, conducted focus groups with area high school students, researched peer mediation models and programs, and assembled an implementation guide that prioritizes youth input.
