Better Teams with BART

Cat, staff mediator, presenting

BART (Boundaries, Authority, Role, Task) is a group dynamics model that helps teams work together towards a common goal.* By utilizing the BART model of understanding group dynamics, teams and leaders can gain personal and collective clarity on how each member of the group contributes to that common goal.

Because we believe in the power of BART to prevent many workplace conflicts, CRCSTL uses a series of facilitations to develop BART facilitators within organizations who can implement the model across teams. This process involves:

BART Presentation and First CRCSTL-led Facilitation:

CRCSTL conducts an initial facilitation of 50 minutes, which introduces BART and begins to ask the team to identify their own boundaries, authority, role, and task. CRCSTL then shares BART materials and notes with the organization's designated BART facilitator(s).**

Second CRCSTL-led Facilitation:

One month after the first facilitation, CRCSTL conducts a second facilitation to help the team go deeper into each of the BART categories.

One-on-One with Organization’s BART Facilitator:

Approximately one month after the second facilitation, CRCSTL meets with the organization’s BART facilitator to prepare the facilitator to lead a BART conversation with their team.

Organization-led Facilitation:

One week after the One-on-One session, the organization’s BART facilitator incorporates what they’ve learned to lead their team through a BART conversation on the topic of their choosing. During the session, CRCSTL observes and takes notes.

One-on-One Debrief and Wrap-up

After the Organization-led Facilitation, CRCSTL meets with the facilitator to debrief and review the session, as well as answer any outstanding questions about BART. Depending on the facilitator’s comfort, the organization is ready to lead its own BART! CRCSTL will continue to offer support as-needed, such as shadowing or conducting a full BART facilitation for more challenging topics.

*This model was first proposed by Zachary Gabriel Green and René J. Molenkamp in their 2005 article “The BART System of Group and Organizational Analysis: Boundary, Authority, Role and Task”

**Organizations may choose to designate more than one BART facilitator.  In those cases, the process is a little different to ensure all facilitators get sufficient opportunity for learning, facilitation, and feedback.  We are happy to work with your team to craft the plan that works for you!
